After a long silence, it is time to let you know what we have been up to in the last few weeks! We arrived in Lima, Peru, yesterday and spent most of today visiting what the capital has to offer... To be honest we haven't been very impressed.
The city is extremely busy and the amount of cars and buses crowding into the streets is just unbelievable. We have experienced a little trip in what they call a 'collectivo'. It is basically a minibus in which they try to fit as many people as possible. There are hundreds of them and we didn't really know which one would bring us to the centre. We took a chance and got on one of them hoping to end up in the right place. We had 35 minutes to experience the crazy driving of Peruvian people... if one can drive here, one can drive anywhere!!!
Once in town, we wandered around for a while and went for what has become our daily 'traditional meal': a plate of lomo/pollo saltado which consists of a plate of rice, chips, onions, tomatoes and beef or chicken). We have been in Peru for ten days now and we have eaten the same thing once a day. It seems to be one of the only dishes served in the country. Don't get us wrong it is quite good but three weeks of that diet and we will need new pairs of trousers!
After that really light meal, we went visiting San Francisco Catacombs which is (according to our travel guide) one of Lima's most beautiful churches. It is an impressive building and its history seems pretty interesting... except that we barely speak spanish and as a consequence didn't understand the comments made by our guide during that 40 minutes tour The catacombs contains the skulls and bones of some seventy thousands people. Rrrrghhh!
We plan on staying one more day in Lima but tomorrow we will avoid the city centre and we'll stay in Miraflores where our hostel is located. This area is closer to the sea and there are lots of craft and antiques markets where to find some typical souvenirs.
We should leave the capital on Sunday to head toward Cusco. A long bus journey of 21 hours should bring us closer to the famous Machu Picchu. We can't wait...
